Chapter Nine

Before she even opened her eyes Carly could feel him staring at her. Waiting patiently, trying to stifle his own excitement, and his urge to pee. She could feel his hot breath on her face as he softly panted, and she wrinkled her nose. Why had a truly effective doggie breath mint continued to elude the world’s most brilliant scientific minds?

She opened her eyes and giggled as Lobo gave her face a lick and then pranced around impatiently. Pulling back the covers, she sat up and stretched. And suddenly, she was as anxious to get up and start the day as her dog, because the sooner she did the sooner she could be with Gabe again.

The strange pull she’d felt from the moment she met him had continued to grow stronger with each passing day, and after their date the previous evening … and his subsequent confession … Carly felt drawn to him in the most powerful of ways. It was crazy. She couldn’t explain it, but her body told her there was no place else she’d rather be than wherever he was.

She dressed in yoga pants and a t-shirt, and she and Lobo headed out for their usual early morning hike through the woods at Wolf Creek. And as they walked, her mind rambled and meandered through all the fantastic and impossible things she’d learned the night before.

Myths. Fables. Legends of folklore and fairytales. Creatures that should never be thought of as existing in the real world somehow existed here in Lunar Falls. It seemed fitting somehow, in this place so lush and green and magically beautiful that it almost felt plucked from one of those fairytales. It was real. Somehow, it was all real. But even though Carly had accepted that fact, she still couldn’t fully wrap her mind around it, and she knew that part of her was still skeptical.

All night long she had tossed and turned, playing her conversation with Gabe over in her head. The things he’d said about Moon Hunter mating rituals … imprinting and bonding … what did all that mean really? And had he gone through the things he described? Had he imprinted on her? And if he had, what did that mean for her now? According to him, her strange reactions to him meant that her body reacted to him as a female Moon Hunter’s would, but she had no real clue what that meant or what came next. Was she somehow giving him signals that she wanted to be with him or something?

“Hello again.”

Carly jumped, startled by the unexpected female voice, and she turned around and stared at Jessica Masters with wide eyes.

“I’m sorry, I thought you saw me,” Jess said with a concerned gaze. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“No, it’s okay. It’s my fault. I’m … a bit preoccupied this morning,” she said.

“Nothing wrong, I hope?” Jessica asked.

“No. Nothing’s wrong, I just uh …” She hesitated, wondering if she should let Gabe’s sister know that she was aware of the truth now.
